Music Monday – Kiss This Thing Goodbye

Tomorrow night is New Year’s Eve 2013, and while 2013 hasn’t been an overly bad year personally, I’ll be just as happy as many to see it go.  I won’t go into all that I found wrong or bad with the year here.  I’ll just say “Adios, 2013!” and “Hallo, 2014!”  Let’s hope (and work to make) 2014 is better than the last.

Turn! Turn! Turn! by The Byrds
(released 1965; peaked #1 US Hot 100, #26 UK Singles)

To everything
turn, turn, turn
there is a season
turn, turn, turn

A time to say goodbye to this year, a time to say hello to the new year.Adapted from the Book of Ecclesiastes, it was a huge hit for The Byrds as an anti-war song as the Viet Nam Conflict was beginning to escalate.  It’s just so simple in its lyrics and delivery that the message is easy to understand, especially the last line promising it’s not too late for peace.  It’s time to turn, turn, turn the calendar to 2014.

Kiss This Thing Goodbye by Del Amitri
(released 1989; peaked #59 UK Singles)
(re-released 1990; peaked #35 US Hot 100, #43 UK Singles)

Come on babe
Let’s kiss this thing
Come on babe
Let’s kiss this thing goodbye

I’m not really sure what it is specifically that I like so much about this song, but there’s a good chance it would make it into a “Favorite Songs of All-Time” list for me…I’m just not sure where it would rank…certainly within the top 100, though.  Come on babe, let’s kiss 2013 goodbye!

So Long, Farewell from The Sound of Music (film)
(movie released in 1965)

So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye
I leave and heave a sigh and say goodbye

It’s not great quality, but it’s time to say Adios to 2013…
