The Wrong Folks Are Getting Furloughed

Here we sit on the eve of the sequestration, February 28, 2013.  Since Congress couldn’t come to an agreement on how to address their inability to stop spending wildly nor how to generate more money for them to cover their runaway spending, hundreds of thousands, probably over a million federal employees are likely to be furloughed or RIF’d, including Department of Defense civilians, Transportation Security Administration workers, and the IRS.  While the loss of jobs and/or pay for DoD employees may not seem like something that will affect the average citizen in the short-term, the same can’t be said of the impact it will likely have on travelers, especially flyers, and people expecting tax refunds, but I’m not going to spend a lot of time on who’s getting canned and the effect on the country.

I’m also not going to argue that some of the things being cut from the budgets of the organizations affected by the sequestration haven’t been needed.  Sometimes it takes drastic measures to force the kind of change that’s needed…the hard, “what can we really not live without” kind of purging.

What I am posting about here is that the folks who caused this, the President and Congress, get to keep “working”, if that’s what we can call what they do, while around one million folks are put out of work or get to see their pay reduced.  I know there are a lot of folks who’ve been laid off over the last half dozen years or so who don’t see a problem with this, who may be angry and bitter because their jobs didn’t get bailed out by the government.  The difference is that the folks losing jobs or pay due to sequestration aren’t being affected by market/economic downturn, they aren’t being punished for poor performance, they are going to feel the hurt because the fidiots in Washington can’t do their jobs…because they fidiots in Washington can’t pass a budget…because the fidiots in Washington can’t stop pointing fingers long enough to realize just how badly they are going to hurt a lot of the citizens they were elected to serve.

The wrong people are being furloughed…the list of those losing jobs/pay should begin with Congress and the President.

BTW, the rough WAG of one million people doesn’t even include contractors whose contracts will be cut.  I’ve got no guess as to how many people that includes.
