Black, Jack Black

Jack Black is funny.  He may not be an Academy Award-winning actor or a Golden Globe winner and I doubt anyone will ever put him at their list of the most talented serious (read: dramatic) actors, but he has been in a lot of movies and a lot of those have been very funny and entertaining.  He had bit/minor roles in a number of movies (The Jackal, Enemy of the State, and Saving Silverman to name a few I’ve seen)  before getting leading roles in comedies and romantic comedies, including School of Rock, Shallow Hal, King Kong, Nacho Libre, and Gulliver’s Travels –again, these are the ones I’ve seen.  Of these, the only one I really didn’t like was Nacho Libre…que horrible!  He’s also done voice over work for some really good animated flicks like Kung-Fu Panda and Ice Age.  One of the things that I really like about a number of these movies are the inclusion of some great music, typically classic rock, that he’s either playing or teaching or singing.  He’s truly multi-talented.  I know he’s not everybody’s cup of tea, but he also played a much more dramatic, though still light-hearted role in one of my favorite romantic comedy/dramas:  The Holiday, along side Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Cameron Diaz.  Again, even in this role, he was a musician.  I think he’s found a great niche and I hope Hollywood can keep finding roles for him to make use of his talents.
