“How I like Claret!” – A Quote by Keats

Veritas Claret 2010Here’s a quote I found on the back of a bottle of Claret 2010 from Veritas Vineyard and Winery:

How I like Claret!  When I can get Claret, I must drink it.  ‘Tis the only palate affair that I am sensual in.  If you could make some wine like Claret to drink on summer evenings in an arbor!  It fills one’s mouth with a gushing freshness, then goes down cool and feverless:  then, you do not feel it quarreling with one’s liver.  No, ’tis rather a peacemaker and lies as quiet as it did in the grape.” – John Keats, 1819, in a letter to his brother

I must agree with Keats.  I’m not a wine enthusiast.  I’m not even a wine drinker.  I am a beer and liquor drinker, but will go with my wife to wine tastings and vineyards when we’re traveling.  In all the times we’ve hit wineries, I’ve never really liked much of what we’ve tasted.  I found the Pirtle Winery in Kansas while on a trip there and liked most of their wines, especially their meads.  And last week, my wife and a couple friends visited Veritas.  Again, there weren’t many in the tasting that I liked, but I did like the Claret, which wasn’t part of their normal tasting line-up, but they were happy to add when we asked.  It wasn’t my favorite, but it was tasty and I look forward to having a glass of it rather than tasting sip from my wife’s.  I really liked their ice wine, Kenmar, and their Othello, which has brandy in it…very yummy.  Since Veritas is only a couple hours away, kid friendly, and we both found a few wines we like, we became members.  If you hang out there, maybe we’ll run into you sometime.
